Wearing a crown is one thing, but what is behind it is what people do not always see or understand. I used to look up to the girls and women in crowns thinking how glamorous their lives would be, how they get to wear the most beautiful gowns, and attend the most sophisticated parties. In 2013 when I first competed at a regional pageant in hopes of attending Miss Teen Canada World (now Miss Teenage Canada), all of the reigning queens walked in and I was so intimidated. I have learned more and more the meaning behind a sash and a crown: dedication, motivation, and understanding who you are and what you represent.
One flight from Calgary, I was in Vancouver to see the reigning queens of British Columbia. I had not mentioned to many that I was coming because I was originally there on business, but it happened to be the same weekend so I thought, why not, let's stay the weekend, see my girls, meet the queens, and get to know the new girls coming into the sisterhood. It really was that simple thankfully.
DAY 1: REHEARSAL & MORE
That first day for the ladies competing for the 2018 chance of a lifetime had rehearsals all morning, rehearsals in the afternoon, followed by an evening of a personal interview with the judges and their swimwear competition. The first day is always filled with nerves good and bad, but when I walked into the room all of the delegates were smiling and laughing with each other. Like every other pageant or pageant oriented event I attended I had another hot beverage with me, this time a grande chai tea late. I wasn't used to the humidity and how the cold got into your bones so Starbucks was my solution! And to add a touch of my awkwardness, when I was introduced to the girls, instead of being poised and classy like Grace Kelly, I addressed the 2018 delegates with a hand up in the air with a quick wave and I quote, "Hi Team." Yeah, classic Mattea...
I knew one of the girls competing from being friends Facebook, we'd talked for years and competed in the same organization, just never at the same time. Within a couple of minutes, I was greeted with a giant hug and it was if we'd been friends (in person instead of just online) for years. I find it is usually similar for a lot of Canadian pageant girls, if not all pageant girls. We all know who each other are, but because of the distance, we may not know each other in person. But the second you meet another queen or delegate its smiles and hugs all around. Its literally is a sisterhood and we all have each other backs, fits each other's dresses, and in this case, crowns.
The girls were back to rehearsing and I was sitting front and center with my Starbucks in hand- one of my many pageant traditions, Starbucks or Tims when I am at an event. Thankfully, I was not alone for long. Miss Teenage Fraser Valley 2017 - Georgia walked into the room with her crown and sash on ready to go. She later told me that she wasn't expecting to see me, but we had a great time chatting. FYI. She's totally been on Disney, so I had a mini fan-girl moment about that! Who wouldn't want to be on Disney? PS. No one really knew I was coming except for a few of the Miss World delegates that I had met the summer before, and the national director.
Once things got going with the opening number choreography, all the delegates were helping each other, which I loved. First hand I know how stressful it can be when you cannot dance and know that 9/10 delegates there are classically trained dancers usually standing to the left and right of you. Okay, that might be a slight exaggeration, but it sure feels that way. Thankfully, the chorus is something that all of the girls nailed and looked like pros. Personally, I would hope I would be at the back because I am that musically inclined.
Then my girl showed up! Natalie Allin waiting in the lobby looking like a blonde bombshell. Not only beautiful, kind, and wonderful, but hands down what I believe a pageant girl should always be. We were Top 6 together at Miss World Canada this past summer, and I still remember each moment we were together on stage and behind cheering each other on.
When I was crowned I still have the memory of when I looked right at Natalie and couldn't stop smiling. Natalie also won Miss Beauty With a Purpose, and also was given the opportunity of a life time and is the current reigning Miss Grand International Canada 2017.
After big hugs and smiles we all went back to see the girls. The delegates were getting ready for their swimwear and interview judging, all were prepared and ready to shine on stage. Lined up, we had the chance to speak with the girls and give them some last minute advice and answer any questions they had.
DAY 2: THE FINALE
Natalie, Georgia, and I had dresses laid out, along with sashes and crowns. Our hair and makeup were done to the standard of a beauty queen and we were off to see who would become the next Miss Teenage B.C. and Miss British Columbia World 2018. The quality of girls at the B.C. Provincials was unbelievable. I found that each lady stood out, they all represented themselves to the best of their abilities and really allowed their personalities to shine. I am speechless with how amazing each of the delegates was, and I am really looking forward to seeing how the Miss World Canada delegates take full advantage of MISS WORLD's Beauty with a Purpose.
Rather than going on and on about all of the details, check out the video at the bottom to see a full recap of all of the crazy that was Miss Teenage & World British Columbia 2018 Pageant.
Ladies, you were beautiful on stage and it was a pleasure to meet you, and you should all be proud of what you accomplished, it takes a lot of courage and faith in yourself to do what you did. I know you all have amazing things in your futures. To the queens that I had not met before, thank you for the warm welcome and all of the amazing memories that made me laugh and smile. Those queen's reigns that came to an end, I hope you are all proud of what you accomplished with your titles, in your communities, and left a legacy that you feel best represents who you are.
To Natalie, you are such a beautiful person inside and out. It was a blessing to meet you at Miss World Canada, and I know we will be sisters for life. I have so much respect for how you carry yourself, how you present yourself, and most importantly how you always treat others with kindness and dignity. You were recognized for your inner and outer beauty, and absolutely deserved to become Miss Grand International Canada 2017. I will see you soon, I promise.
Congratulations Miss Teenage B.C. 2018 - Tina , and Natasha on upgrading four years later from a former Miss Teenage B.C. to the new Miss British Columbia World 2018! You both were amazing, and I cannot wait to see what you do with your titles! Natasha I will see you at nationals this summer!
